Softball Explodes for Saturday Afternoon Win Against Akron, 11-3

MACON, Ga. – The Drexel softball team exploded for 11 runs Saturday afternoon at Sikes Field to down the Akron Zips at the Mercer Black and Orange Challenge, 11-3. The Dragons are now 1-3 on the year.
Drexel wasted no time getting on the board. After Jenelle Ladrido walked to lead off the Dragons' half of the first, Linda Rush smacked an RBI double to left-center. The next batter, Kristi DiMeo, lined a single up the middle to score Rush and give the Dragons the early 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Akron took the lead, hanging a three-spot on the Dragons. The Zips strung together a couple hits and used their patience at the plate against Drexel starter Brooklyn Daly. Kayla Kmett knocked an RBI single, but then an errant throw scored two more to momentarily take the lead. The Dragons did not falter, though, storming back for five more runs and the lead in the bottom half. After Hannah Walker singled and Reilly Jo Swanson reached on an error, Taylor Lee singled to right to plate Walker and then Swanson scored on the throw. Rush then hit an RBI single, before DiMeo came up with a two-run single of her own to cap the five-run fourth.
The Dragons closed it out with a four-run fifth to run-rule the Zips. Drexel got singles from Megan Trivelpiece, Swanson and Taylor Kent, the latter of which plated a run. That set up Lee, who stepped to the plate and belted a three-run home run to centerfield to close out the 11-3 Drexel win.
Katie January, who came on in relief in the fourth, was credited with the win after two-thirds of an inning of work. Daly pitched well before running into the jam in the fourth, going 3 2/3, giving up one earned on four hits and three walks. Kooper Vertz took the loss for Akron. Lee, Rush and DiMeo combined to go 6 for 8 with nine RBI.
The Dragons close out play in Georgia Sunday morning against Akron at 11 a.m.
