NEWARK, Del. – After a scoreless five innings, the Drexel softball team used a three-run sixth inning to secure a 3-1 victory and take the series against Delaware on Monday afternoon. The Dragons improve their record to 8-8-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The final game of the series began as a classic pitcher's duel between Drexel pitcher Katie Haley and Delaware's Maddi Marsh as both sides combined for just five hits through five innings.
Drexel finally broke through in the sixth thanks to Kristi DiMeo. With runners on base, the Drexel first baseman stepped up to the plate and drilled a double to right center to drive in Linda Rush and Hannah Walker for a 2-0 lead. Using this momentum, DiMeo then found her way to the plate during a groundout double play that came off the bat of Megan Trivelpiece for the Dragons third run of the inning.
The Blue Hens were held in check offensively for most of the contest, only tallying three hits until the sixth when a Anna Steinmetz single up the middle scored Delaware a run and cut the deficit down to two. Delaware then attempted to spark a comeback by packing the bases, however, Haley found her way out of the inning forcing Chayanna Gallardo to pop up to second for a third out.
In the circle, Haley hurled a complete game and was credited with the win to improve her record to 4-2. The senior also fanned five batters while only allowing five hits and one run.
The Dragons will return to action when they host a doubleheader against Wagner on Wednesday, March 28 beginning at 2 p.m.
