Softball Splits with Wagner on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader against Wagner on Wednesday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field. The Dragons cruised to a 14-5 victory against the Seahawks in game one before dropping the nightcap 13-11.
The day's first game did not come without a little excitement, as the Dragons dug out of a 5-0 deficit to capture the win. The Seahawks strung together a couple of hits, including a home run and two doubles to plate five runs in the second. Wasting no time, Drexel fired back with five runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to tie the game and ignite a comeback. Kristi DiMeo sparked the rally for the Dragons with a leadoff home run out of center field. Megan Trivelpiece then ripped a double to left field to score Elena Woulfe before a Taylor Kent single and a fielder's choice drove in two more runs. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Linda Rush earned the Dragon's their fifth run to tie the game and close out the inning.
The comeback would be complete in the third, as Drexel pushed three home to jump out in front, 8-5. A hit-by-pitch forced the first run across the plate before a Hannah Walker single drove in Holly Bridgman and Reilly Jo Swanson for the Dragon's eighth run of the game.
DiMeo would once again spark the offense, as she struck a double to center field to get on base in the following inning. Using this momentum, Taylor M. Lee struck a home run over the fence to plate two more runs for the 10-5 lead.
After blanking the Seahawks for three straight innings, the Dragons used an error to push two across before Lee hit her second homer of the day for a walk-off 14-5 victory.
Devon Grippe picked up the win in the circle and improved her record to 2-3. She did not allow any hits or runs in 3.0 innings while striking out one. Lee went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. DiMeo also had an impressive game, batting 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI.
A little more than 20 minutes later, the Dragons returned to the field for their second game against the Seahawks, starting off the contest with a 3-0 edge in the first inning. Walker opened up the scoring with a triple to drive in one run and was brought home with a bunt from Lee. With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice would then give Linda Rush the chance to sneak home for the third run.
Both teams exchanged a run in the second inning and the game remained tightly contested until Wagner used two back-to-back four-run innings to jump ahead to a 9-4 lead.
Wagner tacked on two more in the sixth, however, the Dragons did not falter as they began to come back from a seven-run deficit in the final two innings. The Dragon's began to chip away with a fielding error and a sacrifice fly for two runs. Then using a pair of fielder's choices, an error and a sacrifice fly from Walker, the Dragons were able to close the gap down to four heading into the seventh inning.
Once again, Wagner was able to squeeze two more runs past home plate, but the Dragons continued to fight responding with three of their own. Although the hosts nearly executed a comeback in the final innings, their unbroken effort was not enough to overcome the early deficit and defeat the Seahawks.
Christina Toven suffered the loss for the Dragons. She pitched 2.1 innings while allowing five runs and six hits. Kent went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Rush went 2-for-5 with two RBI. In addition, Walker drove in four RBI.
Drexel will return to action on Friday, March 30 for a series with the College of Charleston. The Dragons and Cougars will face off in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. and then round out the series with a single game on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
