MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Drexel softball team dropped two games to College of Charleston in a doubleheader on Friday evening. The Dragons fell 7-3 in game one one before dropping the nightcap 4-1.
In game one, Charleston took an early lead in the first inning with a two-run homer off the bat of Jordin Jones. After drawing two walks and reaching on a fielder's choice, the Dragons threatened in the third with the bases loaded. Charleston pitcher Izzy Berouty, however, was able to find her way out of the inning with her third strikeout of the day. Looking to use the momentum from the defense's play, the Cougars tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning off of a wild pitch.
Up 3-0, Charleston added another run with an RBI double before the Cougars used a four-run fourth inning to jump ahead to a 7-0 lead and secure the victory.
The Dragons fight, though, was unbreakable as they finally broke through in the fifth thanks to Elena Woulfe. The Drexel second baseman hit a single to advance Linda Rush for the visitor's first run. Reilly Jo Swanson then stepped up to the plate and blasted her second double of the season to drive in another run for the Dragons.
Down 7-2, Hannah Walker used a throwing error to tack on an unearned run in the sixth, but the comeback effort was too late, as the Dragon's were unable to steal back the victory from the Cougars.
Despite the loss, Drexel received solid showings from Rush and Swanson who each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Devon Grippe suffered the loss as she allowed six hits and seven runs in 3.2 innings of work.
After three scoreless innings that featured dominant pitching on both sides, the Cougars broke through in the fourth behind back-to-back doubles for the 1-0 lead in game two.
Only down by one, the Dragons had a chance to tie the game in the following inning when Emma Dryden was tagged out at home reaching on a fielder's choice. This woke Charleston up, as the Cougars then went on to score three runs in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.
The Dragons would go on to score a run in the sixth with a Woulfe single, but it was not enough to defeat the earlier four-run deficit.
Katie Haley suffered the loss in the circle as her record fell to 4-3. The senior allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings while striking out two.
The Dragons will get right back to work on Saturday, March 31 as they round out their series with Charleston at 1 p.m.
