MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Linda Rush went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer to help propel the Drexel softball team to a 6-4 win against the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars held the Dragons close at the start of the game, but Drexel would ultimately pull away as the game progressed.
The Dragons got on the board first with a Kristi DiMeo single to drive in Rush to take the early 1-0 lead in the first. The Cougars then responded in the following inning by using a RBI single to tie the game 1-1.
With two on base, Rush stepped up to the plate with composure and belted a three-run homer out of left center to drive in three runs for a 4-1 lead. After blanking Charleston in the bottom half of the third, DiMeo hit a sacrifice fly to plate Kent and pad the lead, 5-1.
Charleston found a way to cut the deficit down to three in the fifth inning by using a double and a groundout to advance runners home. The Dragons, however, added an insurance run in the sixth with a double from Rush to secure the lead. The Cougars gave it one last shot in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to plate another run, but it was not enough to overcome to Dragons, who earned the 6-4 win at the end of the game.
In addition to her three-run homer, Rush also added a double and four RBI. DiMeo went 2-for-3 at bat with two RBI while Reilly Jo Swanson went 2-for-4 with a double. Katie Haley picked up the win in the circle and improved her record to 5-3. She pitched a complete game while only allowing four runs and striking out two.
The Dragons will return to action on Tuesday, April 3 when they travel to Villanova for a 4 p.m. contest.
