VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Drexel softball team tied Villanova 8-8 on Tuesday afternoon after coming back from an early four-run deficit. The game was called short after six innings due to unplayable weather.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage in the first inning using a pair of hits and a hit-by-pitch to advance runners home. The lead, however, was short-lived as the Dragons broke the game open with a huge seven-run third inning to take over. Kristi DiMeo, Taylor M. Lee and Elena Woulfe started things off for the Dragons with three RBI doubles in a row before Reilly Jo Swanson sliced a single through center field to drive in Woulfe for the 5-4 edge. Jenelle Ladrido then put Drexel up 7-4 and closed out the scoring in the third with the Dragon's second two-run double of the day.
In the fourth inning, Devon Grippe entered the game as the relief and got the remaining two outs to send the game into the top of the fifth. The Dragons would then add an insurance marker when Ladrido advanced home using a Taylor Kent single and a Villanova fielding error.
Down by four, the game took a turn as Villanova found a way to claw its way back with four runs before the rain cut the game short for a final 8-8 score in six innings.
Ladrido led the offense going a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBI, one double and one stolen base while Lee and Kent both went 2-for-3 on the day. Brooklyn Daly got the start for the Dragons. The freshman hurled 3.1 innings while allowing three hits and four runs. Grippe came in as the relief, allowing four hits and four runs in 2.1 innings of work. Each pitcher tallied one strikeout apiece.
The Dragons will return to action on Thursday, April 5 when they host Delaware state for a doubleheader.
