PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the second half to pull away from the Marist Red Foxes Saturday evening at Vidas Field, 15-5. The win was the Dragons' first of the year. They are now 1-3, while Marist dropped to 1-5.
Marist took an early 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Dragons scored 14 of the game's final 16 goals, including an 11-1 second-half run, for a commanding victory. Matt Varian led the Dragons with four goals and three assists, while Nick Fox and Reid Bowering scored four goals apiece. Marshal King dished out three assists.
The Red Foxes got on the board first with an unassisted score from Jon Constant just 34 seconds in. Less than two and a half minutes later, Marist's Gannon Morrison found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage. After Varian netted his first score of the day at the 9:01 mark of the first quarter, the Red Foxes answered 30 seconds later when Jason Intermesoli found Joe Tierney to regain the two-goal advantage. Drexel, though, was not done, ending the first quarter on a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead into the second. King found Varian at the 7:24 mark before Varian again sent one home, this time at the 3:45 mark. As the quarter was winding down, the Dragons capitalized on a Sam Algrim slashing penalty as Varian found Jake O'Donnell for the man-up goal with five ticks left on the clock.
Both defenses solidified in the second quarter. Only Marist could break through for a score, when James Sarrocco notched his first goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:41 until halftime. The Dragons were able to weather a few penalties in the second, and Chre Teitelbaum made three of his 11 saves.
The Dragons made their move in the third quarter to take control of the game, breaking through the Marist defense for six straight goals. Drexel opened the quarter when less than a minute in, Varian found Bowering from behind the net for the go-ahead goal. Less than 60 seconds later, the Dragons ran the same exact play, as Varian again found Bowering on the right side of the goal for the score. Just over two minutes later Fox put one past Bryan Corrigan for his first of the game. Fox was not done yet. At the 8:41 mark of the third, he again tallied an unassisted score before taking the feed from King less than three minutes later for his third goal in less than five and a half minutes. The Dragons again struck in the closing minute of a quarter as Bowering sent home another with 37 seconds on the clock to make the score 10-4.
Marist opened the scoring in the fourth with Morrison's second goal, but the Dragons would close the game out on a five-goal run. The run began at 12:20, just 23 seconds after Morrison's goal, as Will Manganiello got in on the action with a blast. Just over a minute later, Chris McLallen found Bowering for Bowering's fourth of the game. At the 9:00 mark, Fox sent in his fourth before King found Varian for Varian's fourth on the man-up with 2:21 on the clock. Again with under a minute left, the Dragons added one more as McLallen wheeled around from the back of the net and stuck one inside the near post with a diving shot to close out the 15-5 win.
The Dragons closed the gap at the face-off circle in the second half to finish at just a 13-11 deficit. Jimmeh Koita went 11-21. Drexel forced 16 Marist turnovers, while the Dragons played a relatively clean game, only giving it back 11 times. Teitelbaum had 11 saves for Drexel, while Corrigan finsihed with nine for Marist.
The Dragons return to action next Saturday at Bryant at 1 p.m.
