HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel wrestling team placed seven wrestlers Sunday and finished fourth as a team at the EIWA Championships hosted at Hofstra's David S. Mark Sports & Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. Zack Fuentes (third), Austin DeSanto (third), Garett Hammond (third), Stephen Loiseau (third), Alex DeCiantis (sixth), Ebed Jarrell (seventh) and Austin Rose (seventh) all placed for the Dragons. DeSanto, Hammond, DeCiantis and Loiseau also punched automatic bids to the NCAA Championships on March 15-17 in Cleveland, Ohio.
DeSanto and Hammond entered Day 2 with semifinals matchups, still alive for conference titles. DeSanto, the top seed in the 133-pound weight class, found himself with a difficult matchup against No. 4 Chaz Tucker of Cornell. Tucker used a late takedown to upset DeSanto, 4-2. DeSanto then moved past No. 8 Jacob Nicholson of Binghamton by injury default to move into the third-place bout. There he met No. 3 Josh Terao, whom he beat earlier in the season in a close match. He again got the best of Terao, 10-8, to take third at 133 pounds and punch his ticket to NCAAs.
Hammond found himself up against the top-seeded 157-pounder Mike D'Angelo of Princeton. D'Angelo came away with an 11-3 major decision. Hammond, however, moved into the consolation and grinded his way to a 3-0 decision over No. 10 Joe Velliquette of Penn for a spot in the third-place match. There, Hammond outlasted No. 8 Lucas Weiland of Army West Point, 5-3, for third place at 157 pounds and a spot in NCAAs.
Fuentes and Loiseau also took home third-place finishes for the Dragons. Fuentes continued to work his way through the consolation bracket, beginning Sunday with a 2-0 decision over No. 2 Nolan Hellickson of Harvard. Fuentes then took an 8-0 major decision from second-seeded Try Chlifoux of Army West Point before outlasting No. 3 Gage Curry of America, 3-1, to take third place on the podium. Loiseau also continued working his way through consolations all the way to a third-place finish at 125 pounds. He opened Day 2 cruising to a 14-2 major decision over Brown's No. 10 Tucker Ziegler before outlasting No. 4 Chris Weiler of Lehigh, 5-3, to make it into the third-place match. There, he found himself up against American's No. 5 Jeric Kasunic, who did not wrestle when the two teams met in the regular season, and Loiseau came away with a 3-2 decision for third at 197 pounds and a ticket to NCAAs.
DeCiantis punched his ticket to NCAAs with a sixth-place finish at 184 pounds. He started the day in consolations with a 10-6 decision over Bucknell's Drew Phipps before dropping a fall to Navy's No. 6 Michael Coleman. That sent him to the fifth-place match, which he medically defaulted to take sixth at 184 pounds and punch his ticket to NCAAs.
Jarrell and Rose each finished seventh at EIWAs to round out the Dragons' placewinners. Jarrell opened Day 2 dropping a technical fall to No. 4 Gordon Wolf of Lehigh. However, Jarrell would redeem himself with an 8-5 decision over Army West Point's No. 7 Andrew Mendel to take seventh at 165 pounds. Rose opened Sunday dropping a 5-2 decision to Columbia's No. 5 Tyrel White. However, Rose, too, redeemed himself in the seventh-place match with his second win of the tournament over No. 8 Sage Heller of Hofstra, taking a 7-2 decision for seventh place at 174 pounds.
The Dragons earned 86.5 points to finish fourth overall for the program's best finish ever. Lehigh took the team title over Cornell 164.5 points.
Drexel's four NCAA qualifiers and the possible at-large bids learn their NCAA fate Wednesday. NCAA Championships will take place on March 15-17 in Cleveland, Ohio at Quicken Loans Arena.
