PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Linda Rush went 5-for-8 on the day with two home runs, two doubles and five RBI to help the Drexel softball team complete a sweep against Howard on Tuesday afternoon at Vidas Complex. The Dragons defeated the Bison, 9-1, in six innings in game one before taking the nightcap, 6-5.
In game one, the Dragons got on the board first thanks to Kristi DiMeo's sixth home run of the season. The first baseman stepped up to the plate and drove one out of center field to score Rush for a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
The Bison were able to cut the deficit in half in the third inning with a RBI double, but the Dragons responded by using a couple of Howard fielding errors to pad the lead by three.
Devon Grippe then came in as relief and struck out two to shut down any chances the visitors had in the fourth before Rush smacked a three-run homer out of right field in the fifth to secure the Dragon's victory.
After a Rush double and a fielding error put two runners on base, Emma Dryden hit a sacrifice fly to end the game and run-rule the Bison, 9-1, in the sixth inning.
Rush led the offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and three RBI. In addition, Taylor Kent went 2-for-3 and Taylor M. Lee went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Brooklyn Daly picked up the win in the circle and improved her record to 3-3. The freshman yielded one run and struck out two in 3.0 innings of work.
In game two, Howard strung together a couple of hits and used a Drexel fielding error to get an early 2-0 edge in the first inning.
Rush then belted a two-run homer out of center field following an RBI single from Kent to put the Dragons ahead 3-2 heading into the second. The visitors, however, stole back the lead in the next inning with two runs on a sacrifice fly and a RBI double.
After Howard added another run in the fourth, the Dragons tacked on three runs of their own for the 6-5 victory. Elena Woulfe got the scoring started with a double to drive in Taylor Kent and Jenelle Ladrido before she scored on a wild pitch.
Kent led the Dragons batting a perfect 4-for-4 with a double while Woulfe went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Rush also went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Katie Haley picked up the win in the circle to improve her record to 6-5. The senior yielded five runs and struck out two in 5.1 innings of work. Grippe was credited with the save and struck out two while not allowing a run in 1.2 innings.
The Dragons will get right back to it on Wednesday, April 11 when they travel to take on Penn at 4 p.m.
