PHILADELPHIA – Devon Grippe struck out a career-high eight batters and Kristi DiMeo had two home runs in game one in a split against Coppin State on Thursday afternoon at Vidas Complex. The Dragons fell to the Eagles, 9-8, before taking the nightcap, 18-1.
In game one, Coppin got on the board first with two back-to-back home runs out of left field for a 3-0 advantage in the first inning.
Coppin then tacked on another run in the third using an RBI single, but the Dragon's defense found a way out and shut down any other chances, forcing the Eagles to leave two runners on base.
After blanking Drexel in the third, the Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth and never looked back.
The Dragons, however, were able to combine to get four back in the next three innings to close the gap. DiMeo smacked two homers over the fence for three runs while Reilly Jo Swanson added another using a Sarah Tannenbaum single.
Despite the early six-run advantage, the Eagle's victory did not come with ease, as Linda Rush and Taylor Lee made it a one-run game both hitting two-run homers out of center field.
Taylor Lee led the offense going 2-for-3 with with two RBI while Rush, DiMeo and Woulfe all went 2-for-4 at the plate. Devon Grippe suffered the loss allowing nine runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Game two was a different story, as the Dragons jumped out to a 12-0 lead after just the first two innings. With two outs, Elena Woulfe stepped up and sliced a double through center to plate three runs in the first.
In the second inning, the Dragons broke the game open using a pair of hits and a couple Coppin fielding errors to tack on nine more runs. DiMeo started the rally with a two-run double before a fielder's choice and two errors brought home four more. Kent then closed out the scoring with a triple to advance two and came home on an error to close out the scoring in the second.
Drexel carried this momentum over into the following inning as they added on five more in the third. After a Woulfe single drove in a run, Emma Dryden struck a three-run double to right before a fielder's choice later brought her home to give the Dragon's a 17-0 advantage.
The final nail in the coffin came in the fourth when the Dragon's scored its 18th run with a Halverson single to take the 18-1 victory in five innings.
Kent and DiMeo each had perfect appearances at the plate while Woulfe and Sophie Halverson both went 3-for-4. In addition, nine batters connected on one or more hits and seven added at least one RBI. Brooklyn Daly picked up the win in the circle. She allowed one run and six hits while striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.
The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, April 14 for a CAA series against UNCW. The Dragons and Seahawks will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. and then round out the series with a single game on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
