PHILADELPHIA - Kristi DiMeo hit two home runs on the day, but the Drexel softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against UNCW on Saturday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field. The Dragons fell to UNCW in a close game one 6-5 and lost 7-6 in the second game.
In game one, DiMeo led off the scoring for the Dragons in the second inning with a solo shot over the center field wall, her ninth of the season, to make it 1-0. Additional singles by Jenelle Ladrido and Taylor Kent brought in two more runs for Drexel making it 3-0 heading into the third.
The Seahawks got a run back in the top of the fourth on a Dragons error to make it 3-1, but the Seahawks ended the frame by flying out to center field, leaving runners stranded at second and third.
UNCW added another pair of runs in the top of the fifth to tie it up 3-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Drexel responded with a leadoff double by Ladrido, who was driven in by a sacrifice fly to short by Hannah Walker. Sophomore Linda Rush then laid down a squeeze bunt to bring in Kent, Rush's team leading forty-first RBI of the season, to make it 5-3 Dragons.
In the top of the sixth UNCW sophomore Kaly Winslow hit a three run-home run to center field to give the Seahawks a 6-5 lead. The Dragons had one final chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh with Haley Lenderman on the mound for UNCW. The Dragons were able to get runners on first and second, but Lenderman was able to close out the game for UNCW.
Leading the Dragon's offense was Ladrido who went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a double while Kent went 2-for-4 and DiMeo added a home run. Devon Grippe suffered the loss in the circle as she allowed three runs and one hit in 2.0 innings of work.
In game two, UNCW struck first in the second inning with a two-run double from Laurel Koontz. The Seahawks then added another run on a Lacey Fox double to take an early 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, DiMeo hit her second home run of the day to right center field to put the Dragons on the board, 3-1. However, in the third, the Seahawks kept up the offense.
Hunter Bizzell drove in a run with a sacrifice ground ball, and Booth Braswell had a RBI single to make it 5-1 Seahawks. UNCW added to the lead in the fifth with a Braswell triple and Emily Langkamp doubled in the sixth to drive in another run, extending the lead to 7-1.
Drexel cut the deficit in the bottom of the sixth with run producing hits by DiMeo and Taylor M. Lee to make it 7-3. The Dragons had one final chance to stage a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and runners on first and second, Walker hit a three-run home run to left field. But ultimately the rally would come up just short, making the final 7-6.
DiMeo led the Dragons going 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double and two RBI. Katie Haley suffered the loss for the Dragons as she allowed eight hits and five runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
The Dragons will wrap up the three-game series with the Seahawks tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Drexel Softball Field.
