PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team was edged by James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association action on Thursday evening at Vidas Field, 1-0.
The first half was a back-and-fourth battle until JMU pulled ahead in the 35th minute of action with a goal from Claire Meiser. Before the go-ahead goal, Drexel keeper Libby Baeza tipped a header over the crossbar to keep the score tied 0-0 and ignite a spark in the Dragons' offense. Senior Shaelyn McCarty then used this momentum for a breakaway and weaved a pass through the back line to freshman Rory Klingensmith who fired a shot just wide of the net. JMU, however, countered the attack finding an opportunity inside the Dragon's 18-yard box when Abby Maltese slipped a pass through to Meiser for the low-driven goal.
In the second half, Drexel weathered some early pressure from JMU to keep the match close. The Dragons then applied the pressure themselves, forcing JMU goalkeeper Hannah McShea to make one save in net. Despite the early deficit, Drexel did not quit as Kiera Hennessy had one last attempt in the final seconds of play. Baeza made all three saves she was called upon to keep it at a 1-0 final decision.
The match was evenly played with both teams registering 10 shots. Baeza made a total of four saves for the Dragons while McShea turned away one shot on goal.
Drexel will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 23 when it travels to the College of Charleston for a 12 p.m. match
