HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Drexel University field hockey team (3-8, 1-1 CAA) dropped a road conference affair to the James Madison University Dukes (5-7, 1-1 CAA) on Friday evening from Harrisonburg, Va. The Dukes used a late goal in the fourth quarter to secure the 1-0 decision.
With 7:24 to play in regulation, JMU's Caroline Cahill broke the scoreless tie for the contest's first and only goal on the night. The unassisted conversion put the Dukes up 1-0 late.
After two corners for the Dragons in the first quarter, they added their third and final of the night with under a minute to play. Sophomore Puk Thewessen took a shot that was blocked to keep JMU's advantage at one as time eventually expired.
Drexel managed four shots with three on target compared to James Madison's 13 with 10 on goal. Senior Tess Horan fired off two shots on the evening and freshman Amber Brouwer had another while Thewessen took the final attempt.
In addition to shots, JMU also led penalty corners, 15-3. The Dragons were able to keep themselves in the game as they held the Dukes without a goal on those 15 opportunities.
Freshman Megan Hadfield faced a season-high 13 shots for the second time this year (13 at Saint Joseph's) while she made nine saves on the night, the most of her young career.
Drexel Head Coach Denise Zelenak remains at 249 career wins.
