DEDHAM, Mass. – The Drexel University field hockey team (4-13, 2-4 CAA) was edged out by the Northeastern Huskies (10-6, 3-2 CAA) on Friday evening from Dedham Field just outside of Boston by a final of 2-1.
A late goal, scored on a penalty corner with under two minutes in regulation, lifted Northeastern in the Dragons' conference final to dash Drexel's postseason hopes.
The Huskies struck first in the second quarter just before halftime with 4:48 on the clock. Northeastern freshman Alli Meehan scored with help from Bella Cuomo to put the Huskies up, 1-0.
After four shots in the first half, Drexel was held without a shot in the third quarter. But a sense of urgency could be felt as the game went into the final 15 minutes, where the Dragons managed three more.
With the team's first shot of the final frame, junior Chandler McFeeley scored the Dragons' first goal of the night 1:25 into the quarter to tie things up with 13:35 to play. It came as her third of the season, all of which have been scored in the last four games. Freshman Isabel Jacobs earned the assist on the play, her second helper of the year.
McFeeley and senior Tess Horan each got looks about a minute after the Drexel goal but the score remained, 1-1.
Late in the period, Drexel had a chance that was kicked away by the Northeastern goalkeeper before the offensive opportunity finished developing.
With two minutes remaining, the Huskies earned their fifth corner of the evening. Meehan delivered her second goal of the night for Northeastern and her 10th of the season which turned out to be the game winner, 2-1.
Drexel freshman goalkeeper Megan Hadfield was lifted with 1:51 remaining in favor of the extra attacker for the Dragons. She made four saves on the night. Senior Katie Bagdon was also credited with a defensive save in the CAA affair, her third of the campaign.
Northeastern led shots, 13-7, and corners, 5-1.
