PITTSBURGH – The Drexel wrestling team finished up Thursday's action from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. on the first day of the 2019 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships. After a first-round loss, redshirt senior Joey Goodhart earned a victory in his consolation bout in the evening to advance to Friday.
Drexel sent four wrestlers to the national championships: 149-pound redshirt sophomore Parker Kropman, 165-pound redshirt junior Ebed Jarrell, 197-pound redshirt senior Stephen Loiseau and heavyweight redshirt senior Joey Goodhart. After losses in the opening round and the consolations, Jarrell, Kropman and Loiseau have seen their time come to an end in Pittsburgh.
Session 3 commences at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 22 on ESPNU and ESPN3.
JOEY GOODHART / HWT / 3rd NCAA Tournament Appearance
First Round // #16 Tate Orndorff (#15 seed, Utah Valley) def. #19 Joey Goodhart (#18 seed, Drexel) / D, 6-4
Goodhart was narrowly defeated by Utah Valley's Tate Orndorff in a bout to close the afternoon session on Thursday. After a scoreless first period, Goodhart grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second behind an escape and takedown. With Orndorff starting down in the third, he got back within one with an escape but then took the lead with a takedown. Goodhart tied it up, 4-4, with another escape but a second takedown by the Utah Valley wrestler gave him the 6-4 decision.
Consolation // #19 Joey Goodhart (#18 seed, Drexel) def. Antonio Pelusi (#31 seed, Franklin & Marshall) / D, 6-2
Goodhart picked up the only win of the day for Drexel in his consolation bout against Franklin & Marshall's Antonio Pelusi. He had previously faced and defeated Pelusi in his final matchup of the EIWA Championships as Goodhart claimed third place at the conference championships.
After a scoreless first, Goodhart secured a takedown against Pelusi on Thursday to go up 2-1 in the second. He added an escape and takedown in the third before securing the riding time point. He was hit with a stall warning but that did not affect the outcome before Pelusi notched his second escape as Goodhart won the 6-2 decision.

STEPHEN LOISEAU / 197 / 2nd NCAA Tournament Appearance
First Round // #14 Josh Hokit (#16 seed, Fresno State) def. #17 Stephen Loiseau (#17 seed, Drexel) / D, 5-1
Loiseau lost a low-scoring battle in the first round to Josh Hokit of Fresno State. Hokit led 2-0 after the first with a takedown. Loiseau got within one in the second with a quick escape to start the period. In the third, Hokit added a second takedown and the riding time point to win the 5-1 decision.
Consolation // Ethan Laird (#32 seed, Rider) def. #17 Stephen Loiseau (#17 seed, Drexel) / D, 7-1
Scoreless after two periods, Loiseau had a late chance to score points in the second period before the referee called a stalemate. After a neutral start in the second, Loiseau went down in the third and scored first in the bout with an immediate escape. Towards the end of the period though, Laird flipped the script and recorded a takedown and cradled Loiseau for the final minute to get four back points and the riding time point as the Drexel senior dropped the 7-1 decision.

First Round // #16 Te'shan Campbell (#21 seed, Ohio State) def. #18 Ebed Jarrell (#12 seed, Drexel) / D, 6-0
Jarrell dropped his first-round bout to Ohio State's Te'shan Campbell in a 6-0 decision. After a scoreless first, Jarrell rode Campbell for the entire second period to gain 2:00 of riding time. Still 0-0 heading into the third, Campbell worked in a takedown and added four nearfall points to win 6-0.

Jarrell was not able to get his offensive attack going in his bout against Minnesota's Carson Brolsma. Jarrell narrowly dropped the matchup by a 3-2 decision. The Drexel junior took a shot in the opening moments of the first period but Brolsma was able to maneuver it into his own takedown. Jarrell worked in an escape as he trailed 2-1 after the one. With Brolsma down in the second, he eventually escaped to gain a 3-1 advantage. Jarrell was back within one with an escape of his own in the third but could not score a tying point in the bout which featured five stalemate calls.

Kropman lost via technical fall to Duke's Mitch Finesilver in his first-round bout. Finesilver worked in an early takedown before Kropman got his only point with a first-period escape as Kropman trailed 4-1 after the first. Starting on the bottom in the second period, Kropman was hit with two stall calls which translated into a Duke point before Finesilver added four back points in the closing seconds to go up 9-1. In the third, Finesilver earned an escape, takedown and four back points before the riding time point to win 17-1.

Kropman dropped his wrestleback bout on Thursday evening to Chattanooga's Tanner Smith. Kropman came out hot, earning three takedowns in the first period. On his second takedown, the redshirt sophomore pulled Smith back to the center of the mat before sweeping out his leg. Kropman held a 6-2 edge after the first period. The second took a swing in favor of Smith as he picked up seven points via an escape, takedown and four-point nearfall. Smith continued in the third period with another takedown as Kropman picked up a stall point. Kropman fell in the 12-7 decision to end his time in Pittsburgh.
