Softball Wins First, Ties Second in Doubleheader Against Lafayette

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (13-10-1) won the first game of a doubleheader over the Lafayette Leopards (2-20-1) on Tuesday afternoon by a final of 7-6 before tying 8-8 in the second game which went nine innings and was halted due to darkness.
QUICK HITS
-Kristi DiMeo went 5-for-7 across the two games with a three-run home run, two doubles and six RBI as she also drew three walks. She now has 98 career hits.
-Linda Rush went 5-for-8 with two doubles and two RBI. She now has 152 career hits becoming the 12th Dragon with more than 150. Rush also has 305 career totals bases, which puts her third all-time at Drexel and two behind second place. She is just two runs and three doubles shy of breaking two school marks.
-Haley Hulitt notched four hits including a solo home run with three RBI on the day. She also made two relief appearances in the circle across 2.1 innings as she picked up the win in game one.
GAME ONE – W, 7-6
Lafayette scored two runs in the top of the first inning before the Dragons responded in the bottom half to even the score. DiMeo recorded a double to left field as she brought Rush and Elena Woulfe home, 2-2.
In the circle, Grippe lasted 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (both unearned) and two walks. After giving up two baserunners in the top of the sixth, Hulitt relieved her in the circle. Hulitt was able to get the final two outs via a strikeout and groundout to avert the Leopard scoring effort.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hulitt helped her cause at the plate with a solo home run to put the Dragons up 3-2.
But Lafayette did not go quietly, scoring four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 advantage.
Drexel railed in the final frame with three hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. With one out Reilly Jo Swanson drew the first walk before Taylor Kent dropped down a bunt single to put runners on first and second with one out. After a popout to the catcher, Drexel was down to its final out. Rush got Drexel within one with a two-run double before DiMeo was intentionally walked. Hulitt brought in the tying run on a single before Taylor M. Lee eventually walked with the bases loaded to bring in pinch runner Emma Dryden as the game-winning run.
GAME TWO – T, 8-8 (9)
In game two, Drexel went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk by Megan Trivelpiece before DiMeo scored on an error.
Lafayette kept inching back with runs in the second and fourth but Drexel met them each time as DiMeo had an RBI single in the second and three-run home run in the fourth to put Drexel up 6-2.
The Leopards scored twice in the fifth to get within two. Hulitt singled through the right single for an RBI base hit in the bottom half of the inning to put Drexel back up by three, 7-4.
A two-run single in the sixth kept Lafayette's hopes alive to make it 7-6. Swanson then scored Walker on a double in the bottom half to make it 8-6.
Lafayette eventually tied it in the seventh when a single up the middle scored the first run before an error on the same play plated the tying run.
Drexel had its chances in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings put could not break free from the tie as the game was called due to darkness, ending 8-8 as the Dragons moved to 13-10-1 on the year.
Freshman Meghan Conroy started the game and lasted 4.1 innings in the circle. Hulitt got the final two outs of the fifth before Brooklyn Daly pitched the last four innings.
