3/28/2019 8:12:00 PM | Softball
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team extended its unbeaten streak to nine games on Thursday as the Dragons swept a doubleheader from St. Peter's at the Drexel Softball Field. The Dragons steadily pulled away for a 10-3 victory in the first game, then pounced on the Peacocks early and often in an 18-0 shutout in the second game.
Five different Dragons hit home runs in the doubleheader, including a pair of inside-the-parkers hit by Sarah Clinton in the second game. She, Linda Rush and Kristi DiMeo all drove in a total of six runs in the two victories. Devon Grippe claimed the win in the circle in the first game with Brooklyn Daly pitching a one-hittter in the second.
A DiMeo double got the Dragons on the board in the first inning, and a four-run second made it a 5-0 Drexel lead early in the first game. Megan Trivelpiece homered in that second inning, and DiMeo drove in Taylor Kent – who had reached on an RBI single of her on – to cap the inning. RJ Swanson also scored on a double steal.
Hannah Walker, Haley Hulitt and Trivelpiece rattled a trio of RBI doubles over the next two frames to make it a 9-3 game, and a Rush RBI single in the fifth capped the scoring in the first game when she drove in Clinton.
Grippe, who pitched 6.2 innings and gave up just one of the Peacocks' three runs, struck out five in her fifth victory of the year.
In the second game, Drexel burst out for an eight-run first inning and never looked back. The scoring started with Rush's 10th home run of the season, a two-run opposite field blast that plated Taylor Kent. Five batters later, with the bases loaded and still just one out in the inning, Clinton roped a slicing line drive down the right field line. It got past the Peacocks' right fielder and went all the way to the wall. The bases were cleared and Clinton sprinted around for her first homer of the season.
It would not be Clinton's only round tripper of the day, however. After Taylor Lee smashed a home run to straightaway center field, Clinton drove a liner to a nearly identical spot as her previous inside-the-parker. She raced around with the Dragons' 10th unanswered run of the game.
A three-run DiMeo home run highlighted another eight-run inning for the Dragons in the bottom of the fourth, and Janelle Ladrido capped the Dragons' romp with a two-run double that provided the final 18-0 margin.
Daly, who allowed just a first-inning double to the Peacocks' lineup, struck out five in here five innings of work as she improved to 9-1 on the season.
The Dragons will return to action over the weekend when they continue Colonial Athletic Association play at home against the College of Charleston. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11 a.m.
