PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader with College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons fell to the Cougars, 11-2 after five innings in the first game of the day, but came back to win their second outing, 5-3. Sarah Clinton hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that broke open a 3-3 game two and gave Drexel the victory.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the first game, scoring two runs off of one hit in the top of the first. The Dragons were able to even the score in the bottom of the inning after Linda Rush drew a walk and then Haley Hulitt hit a two-out shot over the fence in center field.
Charleston broke the game open, however, in the top of the second. The Cougars had two runs cross the plate in the inning before Jenna Helberg came up with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam that gave Charleston an 8-2 advantage.
The Cougars extended their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a run as Gracyn Thrasher hit an infield single to bring in Lexee Emanuel from third. In the top of the fifth, Charleston made it an 11-2 game as Emanuel singled up the middle with runners on second and third to clear the bases. The Dragons were not able to overcome the deficit and fell to the Cougars after five innings with the run rule going into effect.
The Cougars' Izzy Berouty earned the win in the first game and improved to 5-8 overall. Drexel's Brooklyn Daly took the loss and moves to 9-2.
Charleston was first on the board in the second game as well, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first. A solo home run from Kelly Sinclair put the Cougars up 2-0 in the second and then they extended their advantage to 3-0 in the third with another unearned run.
The Dragons were able to get things going and tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Pinch hitter Megan Trivelpiece drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Drexel's first run of the game. Then with two outs, Linda Rush singled up the middle to bring Elena Woulfe and Reilly Jo Swanson across the plate, which evened the score at 3-3.
The game remained tied into the bottom of the sixth when Swanson led off with a single up the middle. Charleston then secured two quick outs, which brought Clinton to the plate. The freshman sent her third-career home run over the fence in center field to put Drexel ahead and give the Dragons the runs they needed to secure the victory.
Clinton went 2-for-4 on the second game with two RBI and one run scored. Rush added a 3-for-4 performance with two RBI, while Swanson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Devon Grippe took the win in game two to improve to 6-5. Hulitt came on in relief and picked up her second save of the year. Charleston's Drayton Siegling was credited with the loss and moved to 5-2 on the season.
With the wins, the Dragons improve to 16-11-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while College of Charleston moves to 16-16, 2-2 CAA.
The Dragons and Cougars will return to action on Sunday at noon to close out the weekend series.
