PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team earned a 8-5 win over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon to take the weekend series from the Cougars in a game that was delayed an hour due to rain.
The late start did not affect the Cougars, who came out swinging in the top of the first. Kelly Sinclair hit a lead-off solo home run to get Charleston on the board. Yari Felix followed with a double to left center and came around to score as Lexee Emanuel added a single to left field. The Cougars' third run came as Dexlie Inman doubled to left center to bring Emanuel in to score.
Drexel was trailing 3-0 into the bottom of the second when the Dragons' bats staged a comeback. Megan Trivelpiece drew a lead-off walk before Taylor Lee hit a long ball over the fence in left field. Later in the inning, Linda Rush added a three-run blast to center field that put the Dragons ahead 5-3.
The Dragons added two more runs in the bottom of the third as a single from Trivelpiece down the right field line brought pinch runner Emma Dryden around to score. Trivelpiece would then cross the plate herself on a sacrifice fly from Hannah Walker, giving Drexel a 7-3 advantage.
The Cougars got one back in the top of the fourth as a single from Alondra Vicary brought Madi Brown around to score from second base. The Drexel defense was able to secure two quick outs, however, to hold Charleston to only one run scored in the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth the Dragons made it an 8-4 game as Reilly Jo Swanson put the ball in play with runners on second and third, allowing pinch runner Taylor Kent to score from third. Drexel would hold this advantage into the seventh inning.
With the game on the line the Cougars were able to get another run across as Jenna Helberg knocked in Felix from second base with a single into right field. Their efforts were cut short, however, as Drexel held on to defeat Charleston, 8-5.
Rush's 10th home run of the season was part of a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI and one run scored. Trivelpiece also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Woulfe added a 3-for-4 outing.
Brooklyn Daly earned her 10th win of the season after coming on in relief of Devon Grippe. Charleston's Izzy Berouty is credited with the loss and moves to 5-9 on the year.
With the win the Dragons improve to 17-11-1 on the season and 5-1 against conference opponents. The Cougars move to 16-17, 2-3 CAA.
The Dragons return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Baltimore to take on Coppin State in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
