UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - The Drexel golf team is back in action beginning on Monday afternoon in the Pacific Northwest. The Dragons will compete in the Redhawk Invitational hosted by Seattle University at Chambers Bay. The tournament, which features 19 teams from across the nation, begins with 36 holes on Monday and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
Drexel's group of five for the tournament will be Alex Butler, Stephen Cerbara, Jeffrey Cunningham, Angelo Giantsopoulos and Connor Schmidt. The team will use Sunday as a practice day before the shotgun start on Monday kicks off the tournament. The field includes four Pac-12 teams (UCLA, Oregon State, Utah and Washington) and a pair of teams from the Big Ten in Indiana and Rutgers. Other squads include Arkansas Little-Rock, Cal Baptist, UC Irvine, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, the hosts from Seattle, Seton Hall, Texas-Arlington and Winthrop.
Chambers Bay is located in scenic University Place and plays at 7,585 yards. The views of both the Pudget Sound and Olympic Mountains as you enter the property are breathtaking. Chambers Bay has played host to some of golf's biggest events, including the 2015 U.S. Open. Jordan Spieth picked up his first U.S. Open win here, edging Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen by one stroke. The 2010 U.S. Amateur was also held on these grounds. It was the first U.S. Amateur ever to be played on a public course.
This is the school's second trip to Chambers Bay. Back in April of 2015, the Dragons finished sixth out of 18 teams. That Drexel team featured Chris Crawford, who was eighth, and Yoseph Dance, who placed 15th. Washington won the tournament that year.
