Schmidt Picks up First Career Win at Lonnie Barton Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Drexel junior Connor Schmidt fired a three-under par 69 and earned medalist honors at the Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted at the LPGA International Golf Club. Schmidt won the event by three strokes and finished with a three-under par 141 in the 36-hole event. The Dragons, in just their first tournament of the spring, had a much better second round and jumped to fifth place in the overall standings.
Schmidt picked up his first career victory in the field which featured 20 college teams and 132 total participants. He was two strokes out heading into the final day, but was just one of two players in the field to shoot under par in the final round. Jeffrey Cunningham, a native of Florida, was Drexel's next best performer at the event with a 156. Alex Butler and Stephen Cerbara each shot a 160, while Angelo Giantsopoulos was one behind his teammates.
Bethune-Cookman won the tournament with a 584 over two days. North Alabama was second, 20 shots back. Longwood, Wright State and Drexel rounded out the top five.
