Dragons Battle No. 14 UMass in CAA Championships on Thursday

AMHERST, Mass. - Drexel will begin the 2019 postseason on Thursday evening in the Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals. The Dragons are the fourth-seed in the Championships and open play at top-seeded and 14th-ranked UMass. The two teams face off at Garber Field at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to the title game against either No. 13 Towson or Delaware. The game can be seen live on the Lacrosse Sports Network.
ABOUT THE DRAGONS
The Dragons are 6-7 and 2-3 in CAA play. Of the team's seven losses, four have come to teams that are currently ranked in the top 20 and five have been by two goals or less. Drexel has the top offense in the CAA, averaging more than 13 goals per game. Reid Bowering leads the way with 43 goals. He is five goals away from tying the school mark for goals in a season and is just two shy of 100 in his career. Matt Varian is coming off a seven point game against Towson and leads the club with 54 points, including 28 assists, the most for a Drexel player in one season since 1991. Marshal King (43 points) gives Drexel three 40-point players for the first time since 2014, when the Dragons won their only CAA title.
Face-off man Jimmeh Koita is second in the CAA in face-off percentage in league play. He is at .638 in the Dragons' five league games. Koita also has 111 ground balls. The Drexel defense has held its opponents to under 10 goals in four of the last six games. Will Stabbert, Matt Klinges and Sean Quinn have started all 13 games. Ross Blumenthal has started each of the last nine games in the cage for DU.

The Minutemen come into the game ranked 14th in the nation in the USILA Poll and 13th in the media poll. UMass is 10-4 this season and has won its last three games and nine of its last 10. The Minutemen clinched the top seed in the tournament with an 11-9 win against Delaware last Friday night. UMass enters play Thursday leading the conference in goals-against average, save percentage and caused turnovers. Chris Connolly leads the CAA in scoring with 4.69 points per game. He has 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points. Tom Meyers has won more than 62 percent of his face offs, while Sean Sconone leads the CAA in save percentage.
