HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 4-seeded Drexel University softball team (30-26-1) dropped the opening game of the 2019 CAA Softball Championships to the No. 5-seeded College of Charleston Cougars (26-28) by a final of 7-5 in 11 innings. The conference tournament is hosted by James Madison from Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va. Drexel plays again tonight in an elimination game.
The teams battled back and forth on Wednesday afternoon as Drexel appeared in a conference tournament game for the first time since 2005. Tied after seven innings, the Dragons matched the Cougars with runs in the ninth and 10th to extend the affair before Charleston scored two in the top of the 11th to win.
The Dragons' Devon Grippe pitched a total of 8.2 innings in the affair. She was light outs through the first five innings, allowing just one hit over the stretch.
She got her first run of offensive support in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Hannah Walker.
After allowing a run and loading the bases in the sixth, Brooklyn Daily came in to pitch in relief. The Cougars were able tack on another two runs for a three-run sixth to go up 3-1. Daly allowed a walk and then a wild pitch to consecutive batters to let in two Charleston runs. After a hit by pitch to load the bases again, Grippe re-entered the game for Drexel and was able to end the inning with a pop up.
Drexel got revenge in the bottom half of the inning as Sarah Clinton doubled to leadoff before Linda Rush launched her 21st home run of the year, extending her Drexel and CAA single-season record, as she tied the affair up with her two-run blast at 3-3.
The Cougars broke through in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 edge on an RBI single.
Sarah Clinton tied up the game 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth. With runners on the corners and one out, Clinton pulled back her bunt attempt and took the ball the other way to right center to score the tying run in Elena Woulfe. Reilly Jo Swanson tried to go first to third on the play but was thrown out. Rush was then intentionally walked before the inning ended on a fly out.
The Cougars added another run in the 10th with an RBI double before Drexel's Haley Hulitt matched with a solo home run to left center in the bottom half of the frame, 5-5.
Charleston took the lead for good in the 11th behind an RBI double and RBI single, 7-5.
