Rudy Named Most Outstanding Swimmer, Kutch Makes History with Backstroke Sweep

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The fourth and final day at the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Championships has come to an end from the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The Dragons finished the championships by winning three medals on Saturday. Gabrielle Rudy was honored as the most outstanding swimmer, and Alexa Kutch made conference history by sweeping the back events.
Rudy was named the 2020 CAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Most Outstanding Swimmer after racking up four golds and one silver.
In the 200 back, Kutch won the event for the fourth year in a row. After placing second in the prelims with a time of 1:59.01 the senior followed up with a gold-medal time of 1:55.85 in the finals. Kutch is the first women's swimmer in CAA history to sweep the 200 backstroke four years in a row. Additionally, she is the only women's swimmer to sweep the backstroke events in all four years of eligibility.
Rudy and Megan Sicinski took home the gold and bronze medal, respectively, in the 200 breast. Rudy swam a 2:16.45 in the prelims and touched the wall in 2:14.54 in the finals, giving Rudy her fifth medal of the 2020 championships. Sicinski finished her prelim swim with a time of 2:15.64 before turning in a bronze-medal time of 2:15.04.
In the 1650 free, Maddie Riley missed out on bronze by one-tenth of a second, posting a mark of 16:53.24.
James Madison won the team championship with 716.5 points. William & Mary finished as runner-up with 626. Towson placed just ahead of Drexel with 557 points. Delaware (fifth, 399), UNCW (sixth, 331.5) and Northeastern (seventh, 262) round out the field.
