Genord's Late Goal Gives Dragons 13-11 Win vs. Marquette

PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Genord scored his fifth goal of the game with 4:41 to go to break a tie as Drexel defeated Marquette, 13-11, on a cold afternoon at Vidas Field. The Dragons evened their record at 2-2, while the Golden Eagles are now 3-2.

Genord had five goals for the second time in 2020 and also had an assist. The junior now has 14 goals in four games this season. Mailman picked up a hat trick, giving him 12 tallies this year. Reid Bowering added two goals and Matthew Varian handed out three assists.

In a game that featured eight ties, Marquette took a one-goal lead early in the fourth quarter. Thomas Washington caused a turnover off the face-off and went in and scored for the second time on the afternoon, making it 10-9. Four minutes elapsed before the Dragons evened it. Genord picked up an unassisted goal, his fourth of the day to make it 10-10. Five minutes later with just under six minutes to play Drexel got the lead back. Collin Mailman rocketed a shot in the upper corner to complete a hat trick. That lead was short lived as Chris Kirschner found a crease and scored from close in with 5:22 remaining. Genord got the game winner 40 seconds later when he raced down the left wing and fired a shot on the run past Marquette goalie John Hulsman. Drexel held on and got an insurance goal late from Nick Fox as they won for the second straight game.

Drexel raced out to a quick. lead but Marquette answered with four straight goals and took a 5-3 lead after a quarter. Drexel's Mailman scored two unassisted goals within a span of 29 seconds to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead just 1:35 into the game. However, Marquette won five straight face-offs to control possession in the first half. Five different Golden Eagles scored in the first quarter. The Dragons went more than 11 minutes without a shot in the quarter. Drexel scored on all three shots they had but they turned it over six times in the opening 15 minutes. The second quarter was all Drexel, as the Dragons scored all four goals in the period. Marquette had some chances, but Ross Blumenthal had a big quarter. The sophomore made three of his six stops in the quarter, including a few at point-blank range. Genord had two goals in the quarter, while Bowering and Jack Mulcahy had the Dragons' other goals.

Kirschner led Marquette with three goals, while Jake Stegman had a pair of goals and four assists. The Golden Eagles won 17 of 27 face-offs and held an advantage in possession for most of the afternoon.

Drexel will play in the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic next weekend. On Friday, the Dragons will face Saint Joseph's at Franklin Field at 5 p.m. Drexel will play Villanova in a neutral site game at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
