Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off UMBC for Wednesday Win, 11-9

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's lacrosse team (5-2) held off the UMBC Retrievers (2-4) on Wednesday from Vidas Field as the Dragons won by a final of 11-9.
HIGHLIGHTS
* With Drexel owning a four-goal lead in each the first and second half, UMBC closed the gap in each period including down to two at halftime and to one with just a few minutes left in the second half. Juniors Karson Harris and Colleen Grady led the way, both recording five-point performances behind four goals and an assist. Grady's final goal stretched the Dragons lead to two with under four minutes to play as DU held on for the victory.
* For Harris, it marked her fifth-straight hat trick and her sixth in seven games this season. Her 25 goals and 33 points lead the Dragons on the year. She also won three draw controls and added a groundball.
* It came as Grady's second-consecutive contest with at least three goals and her second time on the year with four goals. The junior now has 17 goals and a team-best 15 assists on the campaign.
* Freshman Corinne Bednarik finished with a goal and an assist in the win. The freshman has nine goals and 10 assists on the year with at least one goal in six of seven affairs with at least a point in every game. Bednarik also won a game-high five draw controls.
* Sophomore Hayleigh Simpson and senior Jamie Schneidereith also tallied goals in the victory.
* Six Dragons caused a Retriever turnover on the day: senior Courtney Dietzel, senior Caroline Cummings, freshman Belle McHugh, senior Jamie Schneidereith, senior Lindsay Shettle and senior Rachel Warden.
* Junior goalie Zoe Bennett (W, 5-2) made eight saves on the afternoon in the win.
GAMEPLAY
First Half /
The Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening six minutes behind goals from Harris, Bednarik and Grady. UMBC tallied its first goal at the 21:12 mark and the Dragons responded a minute later to make it 4-1 with Harris' second goal of the afternoon. The Retrievers struck again before Drexel recorded the next two off the sticks of Simpson and Grady to take a four-goal edge. UMBC was able to cut that margin in half with the final two goals of halftime as DU took a 6-4 edge into the locker room.
Second Half /
Harris notched her third and fourth goals of the game in the opening 1:47 of the second half, 8-4. UMBC scored four of the next five goals to make it a one-goal game in favor of the Dragons, 9-8, with six minutes to play. Grady netted two goals in the second half including her fourth of the game with under four minutes to play to extend DU's advantage back to two, 10-8. Jamie Schneidereith tacked on another a minute late as insurance, 11-8, before UMBC scored with five seconds to go, 11-9.
BY THE NUMBERS
* Shots were relatively even with UMBC slightly favored, 24-22.
* Drexel put 20 of its 22 shots on target.
* Draw controls were even, 11-11. Bednarik won a game-high five for the Dragons.
* Drexel was 12-of-14 on clear attempts.
* DU also forced 11 UMBC turnovers including six that were caused by Dragons.

Drexel makes the short trip to La Salle for a road game on Saturday, March 14 with an 11 a.m. first draw. From there, the Dragons have a bit of a break before their San Diego, Calif. trip where they will face No. 16 Denver on Tuesday, March 24 and San Diego State on Saturday, March 28.
