PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team (5-5-1, 2-1-1 CAA) came up short against Philadelphia City 6 opponent Penn (5-3-2, 0-1-1) on Tuesday night. The Dragons took the lead into halftime, but a pair of Penn goals in the second half lifted the Quakers over Drexel.
Midway through the first half, the Dragons found an opening in Penn's defense. Patrick Murphy had the ball outside the penalty area near the right corner post and crossed the ball to Chris Donovan, who was waiting in the center of the field. The Paoli, Pa. native had enough space to beat the diving keeper and scored his ninth goal of the season. The goal also sets a new season-high for the senior. The assist was Murphy's first of the year.
In the second half, Penn scored its first goal after a deflection off the post went into the middle of the field. Matt Leigh, Penn's leading scorer, had a wide-open net and tied the game at one. Minutes later, the Quakers added another goal and took the lead for good.
Despite the two second-half goals by Penn, the Drexel defense continued to be a bright spot for the Dragons. The back line held Penn to eight shots.
On the other end of the field, the Drexel offense could not catch a break. The Dragons fired a season-high 24 shots, 12 on goal, and kept possession of the ball for most of the game.
Drexel returns to conference play on Saturday, October 16. The Dragons will travel south to Williamsburg, Va., to face the Tribe in a crucial mid-season match. After the conference bye weekend, Drexel is two conference points away from fourth-place Northeastern. The match against William & Mary is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on FloFC.
