PHILADELPHIA – Second-half goals scored by Chris Donovan and Joey Martini propelled the Drexel men's soccer team (6-6-1) past the NJIT Highlanders (3-10-1) on Tuesday night, 2-1.
The match was scoreless through halftime, and neither team could find an opening to take the lead. Drexel led in shots, 9-4, and possessed the ball for much of the front half. When the match resumed in the second half, Drexel was quick to apply pressure. The Dragons did not take a shot but were able to hold the ball on the offensive front.
In the 55th minute, A NJIT defender blocked an attempt on goal from Kyle Tucker and the ball ricocheted to Donovan. The Paoli, Pa. native took a shot, which the diving Highlander goalkeeper batted down. The ball bounced back to Donovan and the senior had an easy look at net. The goal is Donovan's 10th goal of the year.
NJIT fired back 10 minutes later, in the 67th minute. A ball crossed in, and deflected by a Drexel player, fell to the feet of Jose Adames. The NJIT forward put the ball into the net to tie the game at one.
In the 85th minute, Patrick Murphey crossed the ball into the box. The cross was a perfect setup for Martini, who beat the diving Highlander keeper to his left. The goal was Martini's second of the year, and the assist was Murphy's second.
Having played its last non-conference match of the fall, Drexel turns its attention towards the CAA. The Dragons are in sixth place in the conference and still have a shot at making a trip to Harrisonburg, Va. for the CAA Men's soccer championship tournament. The Dragons will first face Northeastern at Vidas Field on Saturday, October 23. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
