PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team (7-6-1, 3-2-1 CAA) defeated the Northeastern Huskies (9-5-2, 3-2-1 CAA) in a must-win match on Saturday at Vidas Field. The Dragons earned two first-half goals and played top-notch defense to shut out the visitors.
In the 12th minute of the game, Drexel scored its first goal. Chris Donovan received a cross by Patrick Murphy and beat the diving Husky keeper to his right. The goal was Donovan's 11th of the year, keeping him in second place in the conference. The assist was Murphy's third of the year.
The Dragons added an insurance goal towards the end of the first half. In the 39th minute, Drexel pieced together one of its best goals of the season. The play began with Joey Martini outside of the Northeastern penalty box. Martini moved to get around a defender and dumped the ball off to Cesar Banacloy on the right side of the penalty box. Without taking much time, Banacloy struck the ball, and it was in the back of the net in less than two seconds.
Drexel's defense kept the explosive Northeastern under control the whole game. The Huskies could only put three shots on target. Cameron Sanders earned his third shutout of the season and now has a 5-5-1 goalie record this fall.
The Dragons are now tied for fifth place in the conference with two weeks remaining. Their next match is against James Madison on Saturday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
