Giantsopoulos is co-medalist in the final round of the fall for DU
HAVERTOWN, Pa. – The Drexel golf team broke open a close tournament with an outstanding back nine and won the City Six Championships for the second straight time. It was the Dragons' second win of the season and wrapped up the fall portion of the schedule. Senior Angelo Giantsopoulos led the way for the Dragons. He picked up co-medalist honors as he fired a one-under-par 70.
Drexel shot three-over par (287) as a team at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, which played at 6,780 yards. Giantsopoulos had five birdies on the day, including one on 18 as the Dragons picked up their second team win of the season. He shared the title with Matt Werner of La Salle. Drue Nicholas, fresh off his CAA Player of the Week award, was one shot behind his teammate and finished tied for third overall. With his birdie on 18, Nicholas has now made par or better in each of his last five rounds and in 12 of his 13 rounds this fall.
Drexel found itself in a battle for most of the day, but once again, the Dragons played their best golf when they needed it most. Liam Hart closed the day in fine fashion by making birdie on 17 and then sinking an eagle on the par four 18th hole. That moved him to two-over par on the day. He finished at 73 along with teammate Jeffrey Cunningham. Cunningham, a senior, closed with birdies on 16 and 17 and didn't make a bogey over the last 12 holes. The duo finished tied for sixth overall.
The Dragons won the event, which was canceled last year due to COVID-19, for the third time in their last four attempts. Drexel finished nine strokes better than Villanova. Saint Joseph's finished third (+15), followed by Temple (+16) and La Salle (+19).
The Dragons' victory capped off an outstanding fall season. After opening the fall with an eighth-place finish at the prestigious GolfWeek Fall Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Dragons rattled off three straight top five finishes, including a victory at the Villanova Fall Invitational in late September. They followed that up with another impressive performance, this time at the Mountaineer Invitational. Drexel finished fourth in a field that included multiple Power Five teams. Earlier this week, the Dragons had their best performance ever at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. They had a second-place finish as Nicholas earned medalist honors.
The spring season begins on February 12 in Palm City, Fla., at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate. The Dragons will play in four events this spring before they compete for a CAA title beginning on April 24.
