PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware raced out to a big first quarter lead Saturday at Vidas Field, and while the Dragons eventually recovered it proved to be too much to overcome as the Blue Hens picked up a 19-12 victory.
Delaware (5-1, 2-0 CAA) had already played five games prior to Saturday, while Drexel's only game to date had been its 12-10 win over Towson a week ago. For 15 minutes, the Hens looked every bit like they were in midseason form. Delaware won nine of 11 faceoffs in the opening period and made the most of their possessions, outshooting Drexel 16-4 and scoring the game's first five goals en route to a 9-1 lead. Sean Donnelly had Drexel's only goal in the period, off a feed from Ryan Genord.
Drexel (1-1, 1-1 CAA) opened the scoring in the second quarter, Aidan Coll finishing a Genord feed, but Delaware scored the next two goals to extend the lead to 11-2. Charles Dumas scored an unassisted goal to make it 11-3, but a killer Hens goal with just 0.6 seconds left in the half made it 12-3 at the break.
Drexel scored three times in the first two minutes of the second half, closing the gap to 12-6, but a pair of UD goals opened the gap back up to eight goals. The Dragons got within six two more times, at 14-8 and 15-9, but Delaware put this one away with four straight goals bridging the third and fourth quarters that made the score 19-9 before Drexel closed it out with the game's last three goals.
Coll and Donnelly led the Drexel scoring parade with three goals each, while Jack Mulcahy scored twice and dished off an assist. Genord had three assists. Mark Hartman, seeing his first significant minutes for Drexel, won 18 of his 25 face-off attempts and had 11 ground balls. For Delaware, Mark Bieda had six points including four goals, while Tye Kurtz also scored four times. Cam Acchione and Mike Robinson both scored three times.
Drexel will travel to New England next weekend to face UMass on Saturday at noon.
