Amherst, Mass. – UMass broke open a close game with four-straight goals to start the fourth quarter and defeated Drexel, 13-7, at Garber Field on Saturday. The Dragons fired 50 shots, but ran into a hot goaltender as they fell to 1-2. UMass is unbeaten in two games.
The Minutemen led 7-4 heading into the final 15 minutes but extended their lead to 11-4 with four goals. Dillon Arant had three of those four scores. Drexel was able to score three goals late, including two by Ryan Genord but it was too little too late. Drexel's offense hit the pipe on at least three occasions in the game and UMass goalkeeper Matt Knote made a career-high 20 shots and kept the Dragon in single-digit for the first time this year.
Genord finished the day with a hat trick and an assist to lead Drexel. Aidan Coll added two goals and an assist, while Collin Mailman and Jack Mulcahy each had two points. Drexel outshot UMass 50-37, while the Minutemen had the edge in ground balls (39-32) and face-offs (14-9).
The third quarter was a defensive struggle until the final five minutes. Drexel broke its scoring drought of almost 15 minutes when Danny Varga's lefty shot skipped pass the UMass keeper. That momentum didn't last long as Gabriel Procyk and Arrant scored similar goals within a minute span. That gave the Minutemen a 7-3 advantage. Mailman stopped the run and got the Dragons to within three through three periods.
The Dragons were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed by two goals. It wasn't from a lack of effort as the Dragons fired 13 shots in the opening 15 minutes. Two of their shots hit the post and seven were turned aside by UMass goalie Matt Knote. UMass scored on its first possession and then increased its lead to 2-0 late in the quarter. The Dragons had an unforced turnover in the offensive end that led to a fast break the other way. Billy Philpot went the length of the field and made it 2-0.
Drexel started the second on the man-down, but cut the UMass lead in half with a shorthanded goal. Sean Quinn caused one of his four turnovers and got the ball to Mailman. The senior found Ryan Genord who scored his third of the season just 39 seconds into the quarter. UMass answered with two straight goals, including one on the man-up, to extend its lead to 4-1. Drexel's Mailman was given a two-minute penalty for an illegal bodycheck and each team ended up scoring during that stretch. Aidan Coll took a pass on the doorstep from Jack Mulcahy in transition for the team's second man-down goal of the game. Less than a minute later, UMass answered with a Trainor goal to make it 5-2 with 4:46 to play in the half. The score stayed that way as the Minutemen led by three at intermission. Knote finished the half with 13 saves.
Arrant finished the day with four goal for UMass. Spencer had two goals and three assists, while Trainor had a pair of goals and assists. The Minutemen could have had more, but Ross Blumenthal made 13 saves for the Dragons, including a couple from in close in the first half.
Drexel is scheduled to face the University of Delaware next Saturday at Vidas Field.
