3/24/2021 8:01:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel scored five straight goals in the first period and never looked back on its way to a 24-8 win on a rainy night in West Philadelphia. The Dragons had goals from 13 different players as they improved to 2-2 on the season.
The Leopards jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but that didn't last long. Drexel had five different players score in a span of less than eight minutes to take a 5-2 lead. Lafayette broke a scoreless drought of more than nine minutes with a Peter Lehman goal, but that would be their last goal for some time. Drexel scored the next seven goals to take a commanding 12-3 lead. Jack Mulcahy had both of his goals during the 7-0 run. Aidan Coll had two others, while Ryan Genord, Zach Augustine and Casey Waller also scored during that stretch. The Dragons headed to intermission with a 14-4 advantage.
The third quarter resembled the first as the Leopards got on the board first. However, the Dragons put together their third five-goal run of the contest. Genord scored two of his four goals in the third period.
Drexel was led by Coll, who had a career-high six points. He scored four goals and handed out two assists. Genord continued his hot start to the season with four goals and five points. Sean Donnelly had his third hat trick of the young season and had five points, while Mulcahy handed out three assists and scored twice. Collin Mailman and Waller each finished with a pair of scores. George Grippo had a career-best three assists.
Drexel outshot Lafayette, 49-34, and came within one shot of reaching 50 for the second straight game. The Dragons picked up 39 ground balls, including 13 from Jimmeh Koita. The senior won 15 of his 26 face-off attempts. Drexel caused 18 turnovers in the game as Lafayette gave up the ball 27 times.
Lehman and John Mathes each had two goals for the Leopards, who dropped to 0-4 this season. The Leopards won five of six face-offs in the fourth quarter to edge the Dragons in that category, 18-17.
The Dragons return to Vidas on Saturday afternoon when they host Robert Morris.
