Softball Scores 22 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep Over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – The Drexel softball team (6-0) swept Lafayette College (0-4) in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Dragons took the first game, 11-2, and won the second game, 7-2.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (2-0) was the starting pitcher for the Dragons in game one. Nelson pitched all five innings allowing one earned run on three hits.
Linda Rush continued her dominance at the plate in game one. The graduate student went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Rush also brought in five runs to push her RBI total to 19.
Sarah Clinton went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Clinton also scored three runs for the Dragons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Clinton struck early for the Dragons. With Taylor Kent on second, Clinton hit a home run to give the Dragons a quick 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Dragons scored four more runs. Clinton singled up the middle and scored Holly Bridgman from third. Rush then hit her second double of the young campaign to score two more runs and giving the Dragons a 5-0 lead. Kristi DiMeo then put the ball in play and was called out at first but was credited with an RBI since Clinton scored on the play.
Lafayette scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, Kinzi Van Wyk hit a ground ball to shortstop. Rush stepped on second for the force out and attempted a throw to first to finish the double play. The ball was thrown away, which allowed for two runs to score. Van Wyk was credited with one RBI on the play.
In the top of the third, Drexel received five insurance runs. First, Elena Woulfe singled to center and scored Reilly Jo Swanson. Woulfe then stole second to have two runners in scoring position. Savaanah Garcia, who was pinch-hitting for Kent, hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Woulfe was now on third. Clinton drew a walk to put runners on first and third for Rush. The shortstop then launched a three-run home run to left field to make it 11-2.
With the Dragons up nine, the game ended after five innings.
GAME TWO
Brooklyn Daly (2-0) shined in her second start of the season. The senior held the Leopards to two runs on six hits and ten strikeouts.
Rush went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. She also scored once for the Dragons.
DiMeo went 2-for-5 for Drexel. She also had a home run and two RBIs.
Alexis Rosenberry pinch-hit for the Dragons in game two and hit a single that scored two runs. The hit was the first of her career.
Game two was the first game of the season where the Dragons played a complete seven-inning game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Lafayette struck in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles for Lafayette gave the Leopards a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, DiMeo led off with a solo home run to left field. The homer was DiMeo's third of the season.
The Dragons scored two more runs in the fifth inning off another long ball. This time, Rush hit the home run.
In the top of the sixth, Woulfe reached first on a throwing error. The error brought home Kent. Rosenberry then singled to left field and cleared the bases. Two runs scored on the single to make it a 6-2 game.
The Dragons pulled away from the Leopards in the top of the seventh. Walker doubled to center and scored Kent on the play. Later in the inning, Woulfe doubled to left-center and scored Carly Bowen. A few batters later, Bridgeman hit a single that plated Woulfe and Garcia. Drexel scored its final run of the seventh after DiMeo hit a single to right field. Bridgman scored on the play, making the score 11-2.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons are scheduled to travel to Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, March 24. The doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
