Softball Sweeps La Salle in Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (9-1) swept the La Salle Explorers (0-9) in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Dragons took game one, 12-2, and completed the sweep in game two, 9-1.
GAME ONE
Meghan Conroy (2-0) started in the circle for the Dragons and pitched three innings holding the explorers to five hits and two earned runs.
Olivia Farris and Lindsay Nelson came into the game in relief. Both pitched one inning and neither allowed a run.
Reilly Jo Swanson went 3-for-3 in game one with a home run and five RBIs. Swanson also scored twice for the Dragons. The home run was Swanson's first of her career.
Kristi DiMeo went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and one run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons opened the game scoring five runs in the first inning. With runners on first and second, DiMeo singled to center field to score Clinton, who was on second. The Dragons then scored their second run on an Explorers miscue. La Salle pitcher, Sarah Dowalo, threw a wild pitch. Scoring on the pitch was Elena Woulfe to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Dragons. Following the wild pitch, Swanson delivered her first home run of the game. The round-tripper cleared the bases and scored three runs.
In the bottom of the second, DiMeo hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Kent. Swanson then drove in two more runs with a single to right field. After two innings, the Dragons had a lead of 8-0.
In the top of the third, La Salle chipped away at the Drexel lead by scoring two runs. Maddie Little singled to second base, and Lauren Begg scored. A few batters later, Casey Walker hit an RBI double down the right field line.
In Drexel's at-bat in the third, Woulfe hit a double that scored two runs to right field. DiMeo then grounded out to second base, scoring Clinton on the play.
In the bottom of the fourth, Holly Bridgman hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The flyout scored Swanson from third. The Dragons extended its lead to 12-2.
With the Dragons up 10, the game ended after five innings.
GAME TWO
Brooklyn Daly (3-1) started for the Dragons and threw a complete game, fanning two batters. Daly also held the Explorers to five hits and one run.
Linda Rush went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a home run in game two. It was her ninth home run in 10 games.
DiMeo went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored. DiMeo hit two home runs, the sixth and seventh of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons took the lead just three batters into the game. Woulfe doubled to left-center, scoring Sarah Clinton. Rush then brought home Woulfe with her ninth home run of the season. DiMeo then tacked on one more run with a home run to the right-center. At the end of the inning, the Dragons had a 4-0 lead over La Salle.
In the bottom of the second, the Dragons scored two more runs. Megan Trivelpiece doubled to center field and brought home DiMeo and Rush.
The game was quiet until the top of the fourth. Mia Recenello hit a double to plate the Explorers' first and only run of the game.
DiMeo hit her second home run of the game at the bottom of the fourth and plated Carly Bowen, who pinch ran for Rush.
Woulfe singled to left-center in the bottom of the fifth and scored Grace Abbonizio to give the Dragons an eight-run lead.
With the Dragons up eight, the game ended after five innings.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons return to the Drexel Softball Field on Wednesday, March 31, to face Morgan State in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
