PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (15-3, 4-2 CAA) defeated the Hofstra Pride (11-10, 4-4 CAA) in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Holly Bridgman ended the game in fashion with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth in the second game. The final score of game two was 6-5. Drexel beat Hofstra in a series for the first time since the 1991 season with the wins today.
GAME ONE
Daly (5-1) threw the third no-hitter of her collegiate career. The senior has tied the program record for the most no-hitters in a career.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-3, two RBIs and a run scored. The senior hit her eighth home run of the season.
Bridgman went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs for the Dragons. She also crossed the plate once.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Bridgman got the scoring started for the Dragons in the bottom of the second inning. Elena Woulfe was walked, and immediately after, Bridgman hit her round-tripper to put the Dragons on top, 2-0.
In the fourth, Bridgman flew out to right field. Reilly Jo Swanson, who was on second, advanced to third on the fly-out. Swanson then scored on an error on the throwback into the infield.
In the fifth, DiMeo hit a home run that scored Linda Rush and gave the Dragons a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Savanaah Garcia hit a double to right-center to score Grace Abbonizio.
In the seventh, Daly retired the Pride hitters in order and finished off the third no-hitter of her career.
GAME TWO
Olivia Farris started in the circle for the Dragons in game two. The freshman went six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Farris also struck out five Hofstra batters in the effort.
Lindsay Nelson (2-0) came into the game in relief and earned the win. Nelson kept the Pride to just one hit through her two innings of work.
Sarah Clinton went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two. Clinton drove in a run along with scoring one herself.
Bridgman entered game two as a substitute and went 1-for-1. Bridgman started Drexel's comeback in the seventh inning and was responsible for the Dragons' winning run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With Garcia on third, Woulfe dropped a squeeze bunt right in front of the pitcher. The bunt was slow enough to score Garcia.
Hofstra scored three runs in the top of the third and took the lead, 3-1.
The lead did not stay for long as the Dragons poured on three runs in the third. DiMeo hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Kent. After the sac-fly, Garcia singled down the right field line to score Clinton. Swanson completed the scoring by singling up the middle. Rush scored on the play.
In the fifth, Hofstra took the lead by scoring two runs. Both, coming off RBI singles. Entering the bottom of the fifth, the Pride had the lead, 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bridgman drew a walk to get the rally started for Drexel. Walker singled to center field to advance Bridgman to second. Megan Trivelpiece came into the game as a pinch hitter and hit a single up the middle to load the bases up. With all the bases occupied, Clinton delivered a deep ball to center to score Bridgman and tie the game at five.
In the eighth, Woulfe doubled to right-center to give the Dragons a chance at winning the game. Bridgman stepped up and delivered one of the biggest hits of her career. The senior sent the ball down the right field line and scored Woulfe to give the Dragons the lead, 6-5.
