FAIRFIELD, Conn.. – Reid Bowering scored six times and the Dragons' defense held Fairfield without a goal for a stretch of more than 32 minutes in a 19-7 win against Fairfield on Saturday at Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. It was the fifth straight win for the Dragons, who are now 6-2 overall and 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Bowering, who missed almost a month this season due to an injury, scored three goals in the first half and added three more in the second. His second goal of the day gave Drexel a 5-4 lead as the Dragons broke open a close game with three-straight scores to end the first half. The Dragons led by just two at intermission, but outscored the Stags 6-0 in the third quarter as part of a 9-0 run. Fairfield was able to break the run with a goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but Drexel's offense scored the next six goals of the game as the Dragons' emptied the bench in the final eight minutes of the game.
The Dragons fired 60 shots in the game, the most they have had this season. Drexel controlled play possession throughout the day. Jimmeh Koita won 13 of his 21 face-off attempts and the defense played well throughout the game. Drexel's defense forced nine of the 20 Fairfield turnovers. When the Stags were able to get a good look, Ross Blumenthal came up with the stop. He made saves on five-straight shots on goal during the second and third period as Drexel went on its run.
Early on, the teams were in a tight battle. The game was tied three times before Fairfield took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter. The Dragons controlled most of the action in the first quarter, but Fairfield goalkeeper Colin Consoli made five stops in the opening 15 minutes. The second quarter was scoreless for more than nine minutes before Luke Hurley set up Jack Mulcahy, who evened the game at 4-4. Drexel's Koita won the ensuing face-off and freshman Brent McVicker picked up the ground ball. He found Bowering, who pump faked past a defender and put the ball in the far corner. Fairfield appeared to have the last possession of the half. However, Drexel caused a turnover and in transition, Hurley found Bowering who completed a hat trick with just five seconds to go in the half.
Aidan Coll, Sean Curcio, Luke Tomak and Zach Augustine each scored a pair of goals in the win. Coll, who was this week's CAA Player of the Week, added a career-high three assists.
