Men's Lacrosse Downs Hofstra for Sixth-Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA - Reid Bowering and Jack Mulcahy each had a hat trick as Drexel defeated No. 20 Hofstra, 12-8, on Senior Day. It was the sixth-straight win for the Dragons, who are now 7-2 overall and 5-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play.

The Pride (6-5, 3-4 CAA) had an early 2-1 lead, but Drexel scored three-straight goals to end the first quarter and take the lead for good. Mulcahy, who opened the scoring just 1:27 into the game, evened the score at 2-2. Bowering then scored two in a row, the second coming off a feed from George Grippo to make it 4-2 after one.

The game stayed close throughout the second quarter. Hofstra's Sterlyn Ardrey and Drexel's Sean Donnelly each scored midway through the quarter. Drexel was able to get the lead to three when Luke Tomak set up Aidan Coll with just 29 seconds remaining before intermission.

The Pride came out strong in the second half and scored two goals in a span of less than four minutes to make it a one-goal game. Justin Lynskey scored in the opening minute and Ardrey completed his hat trick at the 11:19 mark of the third. Drexel was able to score two of the next three goals, one by Coll and one by Bowering, to take an 8-6 lead. The fourth quarter was all Drexel. The Dragons scored four times to extend the lead to 12-6. Tomak scored a pair for the Dragons, sandwiched around a Ryan Genord score. The lead swelled to six when Grippo caused a turnover, raced down field and found Mulcahy. The junior wound up and fired a shot home for his third of the day. The Pride added two goals later in the quarter but couldn't get any closer as the Dragons extended their winning streak.

Drexel's defense played well the entire game. Senior Sean Quinn did an outstanding job covering Hofstra's All-America candidate Ryan Tierney in check. Quinn held Tierney, who came into the game leading the CAA in scoring, to just one assist. Hofstra committed 20 turnovers in the game, nine which were caused by the Drexel defense. The Pride outshot Drexel, 41-38, but were able to get just eight shots past Ross Blumenthal. The junior made 12 saves, including a few key stops in close while the game was still tight. It was the team's third win against a nationally-ranked team this season.

Bobby Casey made 10 stops in the cage for Hofstra. The Pride was led by Ardrey's three goals. James Philbin had a pair of goals, while Lynskey finished with two points.

It was the final home game for Drexel seniors Reid Bowering, Aidan Coll, Casey DuBois, Luke Hurley, Pat Kiernan, Jimmeh Koita, Paul Macrina, Collin Mailman, John Van Sickle and Kyle Worsley.

Drexel is scheduled to close the regular season on Saturday at Towson. The CAA Championships begin the following Thursday on the campus of Hofstra.
