Dragons Earn Fourth Seed in the CAA Championships
TOWSON, Md. - Emily Owens scored off a penalty corner in the third quarter for the game's only goal as Drexel shutout Towson, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Towson Field Hockey Complex. With the win, the Dragons closed their regular season with a 5-5 record and a 3-3 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dragons were selected as the fourth-seed in the upcoming CAA Championships and will face top-seed James Madison in the opening round on Thursday.
The game was scoreless at intermission despite the Dragons controlling play throughout. Drexel outshot the Tigers, 9-2, over the first 30 minutes. Drexel's defense did not allow a shot on goal during the half. The game opened a little more on the offensive end in the third. Owens scored her goal in the game's 32nd minute when she converted the corner from Puk Thewessen. Towson tried to answer and had some chances as the Tigers took six of their 10 shots in the quarter. However, Drexel goalkeeper Megan Hadfield made five saves in the third quarter on her way to the shutout.
Towson fell to 1-5 in CAA play and 2-6 overall. Lena Vandam kept the Tigers in the game by making 13 saves. The Dragons' offense fired 22 shots at Vandam in the contest.
The Dragons and the Dukes will face-off at noon on Thursday at Rullo Stadium on the campus of the University of Delaware. The two teams met earlier this season with JMU prevailing in Philadelphia, 2-1. The winner will face the winner of the William & Mary-Delaware game, which begins at 4 p.m.
