PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (21-8, 8-4 CAA) defeated the Delaware Blue Hens (19-6, 9-5 CAA) in the series finale on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons put together a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Delaware, 3-2.
With the win, the Dragons have possession of first place in the north division of the CAA. With a win percentage of .667, the Dragons have a slight advantage over the Blue Hens who have a .643 win percentage.
Brooklyn Daly (8-1) threw a complete game and held Delaware to two runs and five hits. Daly now has a 1.66 earned run average and ranked third in the CAA.
Holly Bridgman drove in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The catcher now has 14 RBIs this season.
Hannah Walker went 2-for-3 with a crucial RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Dragons the lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game remained locked at zero until Delaware finally scored its first run in the top of the fourth. It was the only run the Blue Hens could score until the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Dragons opened the inning with a single. Alana Backstrom entered the game as a pinch-runner for Megan Trivelpiece. With a runner on first, Reilly Jo Swanson pushed a bunt past the pitcher and reached first. Swanson then stole second. With runners on second and third, Sarah Clinton put the ball in play. Backstrom was thrown out running for home plate. Clinton stole second base to put runners on second and third once more. Bridgman then laid down a bunt, and the Dragons executed the squeeze play to perfection and tied the game at one. Following the sacrifice bunt, Walker hit a single to left-center and scored Clinton to give the Dragons the lead. Savaanah Garcia tacked on an insurance run for the Dragons by doubling to right-center. The double scored Bridgman.
The Blue Hens scored one run in the top of the seventh, but that was all Delaware could get as Daly completed the inning without any more damage.
