Softball Defeats Saint Joseph's, 8-5

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (22-8) defeated the Saint Joseph's Hawks (19-17) by a score of 8-5 on Wednesday afternoon.
Jessica Schable (3-0) started in the circle for the Dragons and went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Schable also struck two batters out.
Lindsay Nelson finished the game by pitching two-thirds of an inning. She held the Hawks to zero hits and just one walk.
Reilly Jo Swanson went four-for-four with a double, an RBI and also scored a run for the Dragons.
Carly Bowen earned her first start of the year and she did not let the opportunity slip. The senior went three-for-three and had two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Holly Bridgman drew an RBI walk. Following the walk, Swanson hit a single, and Rush scored. With the Dragons up two, Savaanah Garcia was hit by a pitch to score another run. The Dragons received another run when Bowen singled to shortstop and beat out the throw. Bridgman scored on the play. The Dragons capped off the inning by scoring two more runs. Taylor Kent reached on a fielder's choice. Scoring on the play was Swanson and Garcia.
The Dragons tacked on another run in the third. Bowen hit a single through the right side to score Hannah Walker from second.
The Hawks scored their first run in the fourth off a sacrifice fly. After the top of the fourth, the Dragons held a 7-1 lead. The Hawks then struck again with a double to center field in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Megan Trivelpiece singled up the middle to score Grace Abbonizio from third to give Drexel an 8-1 lead.
Saint Joe's scored three runs and trimmed the Drexel lead to three in the top of the seventh. The Dragons stopped the threat and finished the game with an 8-5 lead.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will travel to Hempstead, N.Y., to play the Hofstra Pride in a three-game series. The two teams will meet on Saturday, May 1, for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Then, the two teams will complete the series on Sunday, May 2, with a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
