NEWARK, Del. – The Drexel softball team (10-3, 1-2 CAA) defeated the Delaware Blue Hens (13-3, 3-2 CAA) in the final game of the three-game series, 5-2, on Monday afternoon. The Dragons received a gutsy pitching performance by the freshman, Olivia Farris. The Newark, Del. native notched her first collegiate win in the effort.
Farris (1-1) also pitched the first complete game of her collegiate career. The freshman pitched seven innings and held Delaware to two runs on seven hits. She also fanned three batters.
Linda Rush went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. The Pittsburgh native also scored two runs for the Dragons.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Her double in the third inning proved to be the game-winning hit as Delaware was unable to score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Hens had the bases loaded and only one out in the second inning. Farris proceeded to strike out the next two Delaware batters to escape the inning unscathed.
Elena Woulfe reached first on a throwing error in the top of the third and advanced to second on the miscue. Holly Bridgman then reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Hannah Walker moved the runners over a bag by hitting a ball back to the pitcher. With two outs and runners on second and third, Rush doubled down the left field line to score both runners and give the Dragons a 2-0 lead. DiMeo added to the lead with an RBI double to right-center. Rush scored on the play to push the lead to three.
Delaware hit a two-run home run to bring the game within one in the bottom half of the third inning.
The score was at a standstill until the Dragons tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh. Sarah Clinton got it started with a single to left field. Clinton stole second base and was in scoring position for Rush. The shortstop popped up to the infield, but the ball was mishandled, and Clinton advanced to third. Rush reached second on the play. The big hit came off DiMeo's bat; the senior singled to left field, scoring both runners and giving the Dragons a 5-2 lead.
Farris retired the Blue Hens in order in the bottom of the seventh to notch her first career complete game.
