Softball Sweeps Howard in Non-Conference Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team swept the visiting Howard University Bison in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Dragons beat the Bison in game one, 10-6, and defeated them once more in game two, 6-1.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson started in the circle and pitched two and two-thirds innings. The sophomore allowed four runs on four hits. Brooklyn Daly (4-1) pitched in relief and completed the game holding Howard to one run on five hits.
Sarah Clinton went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run with four RBIs. Clinton also crossed the plate three times.
Elena Woulfe was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Woulfe hit two doubles in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Kristi DiMeo hit a single through the hole between shortstop and third base. The single scored Woulfe and Linda Rush, who scored on a fielding error in left field.
In the second inning, the Dragons tacked on two runs to push the lead to four. Clinton got the scoring started with a fielder's choice that scored Holly Bridgman. A batter later, Woulfe hit her first double of the game, scoring Clinton, who was on first.
In the top of the third, the Bison took the lead, scoring five runs. Daly entered the game in relief with two outs in the inning.
The Dragons took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Clinton doubled and advanced Kent to third. With runners on second and third, Woulfe singled to left-center and scored both runners. Later in the inning, DiMeo hit a sacrifice fly to score Woulfe and push the score to 7-5.
Drexel extended its lead to five in the bottom of the fifth. Clinton hit her first home run of the year. The round-tripper scored three runs.
The Bison scored one run in the top of the sixth off an RBI double to right-center. That was all they could get as the Dragons shut down the Bison offense and ended the game with a score of 10-6.
GAME TWO
Meghan Conroy (3-0) got the call to start game two for the Dragons. Conroy pitched a complete game and held Howard to four hits and one run.
Ashley Errico hit her first collegiate home run in the second inning of the game. Errico drew two walks and reached base on all three of her at-bats.
Angelina Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. The home run was Sanchez's first hit of her collegiate career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel scored its first run in the bottom of the first. DiMeo grounded out to second base and drove in Woulfe, who was on third.
Errico tacked on a run in the bottom of the second by hitting her first collegiate home run. With the home run, the Dragons took the lead, 2-0.
Howard played small ball to record its first run in the third inning. With runners on first and third, the Bison attempted to steal second base and then took home on the throw down to second.
In the third, DiMeo hit her seventh home run of the season and scored Rush, who had doubled to center.
Drexel received its last two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sanchez hit a home run to left field, the first of her collegiate career. The homer scored Errico, who was walked earlier in the inning.
Conroy returned in the seventh inning and set the Bison hitters down in order. The Dragons defeated Howard in game two, 6-1.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will host the Hofstra Pride in a three-game series. The first game will begin with a single game on Friday, April 9, at 2 p.m.
