Olivia Farris started in the circle and went two and a third innings. The freshman let up six hits and allowed four runs. Farris returned to the game in the sixth inning to finish the game and earn the first save of her collegiate career.
Lindsay Nelson (4-1) was credited with the win. The sophomore went three and a third, holding the Pride to four hits and one run. Nelson also fanned three batters.
Savaanah Garcia went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored one run.
Linda Rush went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and crossing the plate three times for the Dragons. The graduate student hit the second triple of her career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride jumped to a lead in the top of the second. A single down the left field line and a miscue in the outfield allowed Hofstra to score its first run of the game. The Pride cleared the bases a few batters later with a home run.
In the top of the third, Hofstra added one more run to the lead with a home run.
The Dragons mounted a comeback in the bottom of the third. Sarah Clinton singled to shortstop, then was moved to second with Elena Woulfe's single through the right side. With runners on first and second, Rush tripled down the right field line and cleared the bases. A few batters later, Megan Trivelpiece singled up the middle to score Rush and cut the deficit to just one. The Dragons struck again with a Holly Bridgman RBI single. Immediately following the RBI single, Hannah Walker drove a ball deep enough to right field to bring home the run that gave the Dragons the lead. At the end of the third, Drexel led the game, 5-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kristi DiMeo singled through the left side. Rush applied some pressure on the outfielders to come up clean with a throw into the infield but, the left fielder faltered and booted the ball away, allowing Rush to score. Later in the inning, Garcia hit an RBI single to left center. Grace Abbonizio, who was pinch running for DiMeo, raced around third and headed for home. Garcia anticipated a throw to home and tried to take second, but she was called out. Abbonizio was able to cross home plate before the third out was made and the Dragons took a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Pride capitalized on an error to score a run and chip away at the Dragons lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Drexel received an insurance run from Garcia. The designated player hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Rush, who was on second base, noticed the Hofstra defense was slow to get the ball into the infield and scored on the fly-out.
In the top of the seventh, Farris retired the Hofstra batters in order to complete the save and help the Dragons win game one of the three-game series, 8-5.
