Daly Throws One-Hitter, Dragons Defeat Elon in First Round of CAA Championships

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Drexel softball team defeated the Elon Phoenix, 9-0, in five innings on Wednesday afternoon. Brooklyn Daly threw a one-hitter to help send the Dragons to the second round of the CAA Softball Championships presented by Primis.
Daly (10-1) went all five innings and held the Phoenix to just one hit. The senior has now pitched 80 innings this year and has an earned run average of 3.04.
Hannah Walker hit two home runs to go 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored. It was the first career multi-home run game for the senior. Walker also tied the CAA record for most home runs in a tournament game.
Linda Rush started the scoring for the Dragons and went 2-for-2 with a home run. The graduate student had two RBIs and scored two runs for the Dragons.
Holly Bridgman went 1-for-1 with a home run. Her home run was a solo shot in the bottom of the second. Bridgman also scored another run for the Dragons to total two runs on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons entered the bottom of the first inning after a one-two-three top of the inning. Elena Woulfe drew a four-pitch walk and immediately rounded the bases as Rush hit the tournament's first home run. The four-bagger was Rush's 15th of the year.
The Dragon's continued to swing the bats in the bottom of the second. With one out, Bridgman hit a home run to right-center to give the Dragons a three-run lead. The home run was Bridgman's second of her career. With two outs in the inning, Walker hit a home run to left-center. The home run was Walker's second of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Dragons tacked on five runs to take a 9-0 lead. Walker hit her second home run of the game and brought home three runs. DiMeo hit a ball up the middle with two outs and a runner on first. The ball deflected off the pitcher and into the glove of the Phoenix shortstop. The player tried to throw DiMeo out at first but overthrew the first basemen, and the ball went out of play. Rush scored on the play. Swanson put the ball in play and it was mishandled by the shortstop. Taylor Kent, who was pinch-running for DiMeo, scored.
With the Dragons up by nine runs, the game ended after the top of the fifth.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will advance to the second round of the tournament. Drexel's opponent will be determined on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as the James Madison Dukes face the Delaware Blue Hens.
