SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Drexel men's soccer team could not find a way to open its 2021 season with a victory on Thursday night at the Syracuse University Soccer Stadium, as the Dragons dropped their first game of the year 2-0 to Syracuse. Drexel held the Orange scoreless until the 65th minute, but it was not enough as Syracuse added a pair of goals to put the match out of reach.
The season opener marked the Drexel debut for several Dragons. Daniel Nesseler and Youri Senden found their way onto Drexel's starting lineup. Andrew Lizyness, Roey Mordechay and Ori Arzi entered the game off the bench for the Dragons. Senden joined Michael McCarthy in being the only Drexel players to be on the field for the full 90 minutes.
The Drexel defense was in mid-season form as it held the Syracuse offense to three shots in the first half. Cameron Sanders earned the start in goal for Drexel and recorded five saves for the Dragons.
The Orange was finally able to score their first goal in the 65th minute. Syracuse played a through ball in front of the goal and Colin Biros flicked the ball off his right heel to find the back of the net.
Syracuse tacked on an insurance goal in the 74th minute to push the lead to 2-0. The Orange took a corner kick from the right side of the field and Christian Curti took a shot off hit right foot to score for the Orange.
The Dragons return to the pitch on Monday, August 30 at 7 p.m. at Lafayette. The Dragons open a home stand for three matches beginning on Friday, September 3 at 6 p.m. against Stony Brook.
