EASTON, Pa. – The Drexel men's soccer team (0-2) fell in heart-breaking fashion on Monday night at Lafayette (1-1) in Easton, Pa. The Dragons scored their lone goal with thirty seconds left in regulation, but it was not enough to hold back the Leopards as a last-second penalty kick put Lafayette in the lead.
Drexel controlled the pace of play for majority of the game, outshooting Lafayette, 6-4, in the first half. The Dragons also had an advantage in corner kicks at 8-1 after 90 minutes of play. Cameron Sanders made five saves for the Dragons.
In the first minute of the second half, the Leopards had an opportunity right in front Sanders. The keeper reached to his left after diving to the right to make the best save of the night.
Lafayette scored its first goal of the game a few minutes later. Marcos Kitromilides finished the play on a pass from Andrew Venezia.
Drexel evened the score with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. Cesar Banacloy crossed a ball to Chris Donovan right outside the goal area. Donovan headed the ball to Joey Martini's left foot, and the senior sent it past the diving Lafayette keeper to score the goal.
With one second remaining, Sanders left the goal to make a play on the ball and collided with a Lafayette player. As a result of the collision, Sanders was issued a red card, and the Leopards received a penalty shot. In Sanders' place, Stephen Kopsachilis entered the game. Kitromilides took the penalty kick for Lafayette and beat the diving Kopsachilis to put the Leopards in the lead to end the game.
Drexel plays its first home match on Friday, September 3, against Stony Brook at Vidas Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
