PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team (2-3, 1-0 CAA) upset the visiting UNCW Seahawks (3-1, 0-1 CAA) in the opening game of CAA play on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. The Dragons scored twice in the second half to lift themselves over the Seahawks.
Not only did Drexel give UNCW its first loss of the season, but the Dragons also defeated the Seahawks in the same week that they received 36 votes in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 list.
The Dragons and UNCW were scoreless through the first half and for most of the second half. The Dragons put pressure on the Seahawks throughout the game, having a significant advantage on shots, 21-7. Cameron Sanders started in the net for the Dragons and played all 90 minutes while making three saves.
The Dragons broke the scoreless tie in the 70th minute of the match. Valtteri Hiilloskorpi was fouled inside the penalty box. Chris Donovan had the chance to put the Dragons ahead, but his shot was saved. After the shot, the UNCW keeper was called for coming off the goal line too soon which gave the Dragons another chance. The Dragons elected Daniel Nesseler to take the second penalty kick. The graduate student did not waste the opportunity and beat the diving keeper to his right.
The Dragons added an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Donovan beat four separate UNCW defenders, including the keeper, to net his third goal of the year.
Drexel travels to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra on Saturday, September 18. The match is set to kick off at 4 p.m. on FloFC.
