PHILADELPHIA – Three road games against Philadelphia rivals and a trip to the Bahamas highlight the 2021-22 Drexel men's basketball schedule. The Dragons will have a demanding schedule with six non-league road contests and a tournament featuring some top mid-major teams before they begin defense of their CAA title in late December. They will play two games against Atlantic 10 schools, two more against American Athletic Conference foes and one against an ACC team.
"We always want to challenge our players by playing a non-conference schedule that gives our players great opportunities while also preparing them for the grind of CAA play," said Spiker. "We feel this schedule does just that. We are very excited to play in the Baha Mar tournament in Nassua against a very competitive field. Playing three games in three days on a neutral site is exactly what we will need to do in March. Having that experience in November will be very helpful for our program. Also, playing Big 5 teams is something we always want to do, whether it be home or away. We are excited to get Saint Joseph's, La Salle and Temple on our schedule, and look forward to continuing those rivalries at the DAC in the future."
The Dragons open the season with two straight games at home. Neumann, with former Drexel standout Jim Rullo on the sidelines, will visit the Daskalakis Athletic Center in the home opener on Nov. 9. Three days later, Fairleigh Dickinson will be in town for a return game from last season.
Drexel will then play 11 of its next 12 games either on the road or at a neutral site. The grueling stretch begins with a trip to Syracuse on Nov. 14. The Orange advanced to the Sweet 16 a year ago. Saint Joseph's will be up next as the Dragons visit Hawk Hill on Nov. 17. The following week, Zach Spiker's team will play in the eight-team Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championships. The Dragons will play Tulane to open the tournament on Nov. 22, the first of three games in three days to close their November schedule.
December won't be any easier for the Dragons. A road game at Princeton starts the month and the following week the Dragons will visit Abilene Christian. The Wildcats won the Southland Conference last season and upset Texas in the NCAA Tournament. Drexel returns home to face Coppin State in its final non-league home game of the season. The Dragons close the non-conference slate at Temple on Dec. 18 and at La Salle on Dec. 21.
The Colonial Athletic Association schedule, which features home-and-home series against all nine teams, begins on Dec. 29 at the College of Charleston. The Dragons will then play at UNCW before returning home to play three-straight league games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The home CAA schedule begins on Jan. 3 when Towson makes its annul visit. JMU and Delaware will also be part of the homestand. Five of the next seven games will be on the road, including the rematch at Delaware on Feb. 5. After the rematch with the Blue Hens, Drexel will return to the DAC for four of its final six contests. Hofstra and Northeastern come to town on Feb. 10 and 12, respectively. After a trip to William & Mary and Elon, the Dragons come home and end the regular season against UNCW and Charleston
After a one-year hiatus, the 2022 CAA Men's Basketball Championships will return to Washington, D.C., this season. All 10 CAA teams will complete for the league championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. The event begins on March 5, with the championship game being held on March 8.
