CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Drexel men's soccer team (4-4-0, 2-1 CAA) scored twice in the second half to propel itself past the College of Charleston (2-4-2, 0-3 CAA) by a score of 2-1. Chris Donovan and Kyle Tucker both scored for the Dragons in the crucial conference matchup. It is the first time the Dragons defeated the Cougars in a match since the 2013 season.
The Cougars opened the scoring up in the 22nd minute. Rio Murray found an opening in Drexel's defense and was able to slide the ball into the net to score Charleston's only goal of the night.
The Dragons struggled to get anything in motion as the Cougars kept finding ways to keep Drexel's key players guarded. As the game entered its latter half, Charleston's defense started to collapse, and it was a matter of time until Drexel would score its first goal. The Dragons struck in the 73rd minute. Cesar Banacloy started a play from the area in front of the Drexel bench. The sophomore crossed the ball into the box where Donovan headed it into the back of the net. The goal was Donovan's fifth of the season and tied the game at one.
Drexel's second goal came about three minutes later. The Dragons drew the Charleston keeper out of the box and nowhere near the goal. Tucker was aware of the situation and launched a shot from about midfield. The ball only bounced once before going into the back of the net. The goal was Tucker's second of the season and his career.
In goal for the Dragons, and earning the 11th win of his career, was Cameron Sanders. The redshirt-senior made one save in the win.
Drexel continues to be efficient with its shots. The Dragons took a total of nine shots on Saturday night, and five of them were on target. The Dragons also took advantage of Charleston's aggressiveness and drew a total of 14 fouls. In comparison, the Dragons only fouled the Cougars seven times.
The Dragons will host Elon in a match on Saturday, October 2. Drexel will welcome back soccer alumni in a day full of activities leading up to game time at 1 p.m.
